I mostly follow a low carb eating style. Well if I’m being 100% honest I eat low carb during the week and try to eat as many carbs as I can on the weekend. It’s called balance y’all.

If you read articles on nutrition and fitness they say that weight loss is 20% exercise and 80% nutrition. This is so true. It doesn’t matter how often you go to the gym if you don’t follow up with the proper nutrition and water intake. As far as water goes aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example if you weight 160 pounds your goal should be 80 ounces of water daily.

What Is Low Carb Eating?

It means restricting the bad carbs, however, it does not mean restricting all carbs. What are bad carbs? Bad carbs are foods with sugar, breads, pasta. Friends, read your labels on everything you eat. Avoid high fructose corn syrup, refined grains like white flour, foods low in nutrients, foods high in calories, foods high in sodium and low in fiber and trans fats. Also, avoid the “low carb” diet foods. They don’t taste good and for me personally I always feel sick to my stomach if I try and eat that stuff.

What are your good carbs? Yes there are good carbs out there! Foods like black beans, whole wheat bread, quinoa, avocados (great for the good fat), cucumbers, berries and so much more! Look for foods that are low in calories, high in a variety of nutrients, high in naturally occurring fiber, low in sodium, no trans fat and low in saturated fat.

Don’t forget that a low carb lifestyle means you have to eat! Do you realized once you begin to feel hungry that your metabolism has already slowed down to conserve energy, mind blown. Keeping your body fed keeps your metabolism revved up which is exactly what you want. And when you are carb counting you do not want to be calorie counting. Most of the good foods are naturally low in calories anyways.

Substitutions For Your Favorite High Carb Foods

Zoodles-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 They are amazing and perfect for low carb! I love zoodles and since I love to do things that are easy my local grocery store sells them already spiraled. All you have to do is cook them. Seriously a win in my non culinary world. Thanks to zoodles I haven’t eaten real pasta in 3 years. Another good substitute to pasta is a brown rice pasta. My family prefers this pasta over pasta made with white flour, they feel it has more flavor. If you need some suggestions click here for 19 zoodle recipes.

Unwiches-                                                                                                                                                                                                                  What is an unwich? It’s a sandwich wrapped in lettuce. Truthfully I never miss the roll when I do this. You don’t need to get fancy either. My go to is Turkey, onion, provolone and mayo wrapped in lettuce. This is definitely my favorite and when I’m feeling extra lazy about making myself lunch I’ll grab a turkey unwich from Jimmy Johns.

Parm Crisps-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    One thing I really missed on a low carb diet was something crunchy. An amazing substitute is parm crisps! You can make them yourself or look for them at your local grocery store, mine has them in the section near the specialty cheese. My favorite are the everything crisps. If you want to make your own here is a recipe.

Dark Chocolate-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Yes, you can eat dark chocolate on a low carb diet! You want one that is at least 70% cocoa- preferably 85% or higher. You want to stay away from milk chocolate because it usually has sugar, milk and cream added. With milk chocolate you can eat a lot in one sitting, however, with dark chocolate a little goes a long way since it is so rich.

Banana Pancakes-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Don’t these banana pancakes sound amazing? I haven’t tried these yet but I found this recipe and this is on our list to try! This recipe only has 3 ingredients and there is no flour in it!

Banana Pancakes

Low Carb Tortilla Shells-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Our family loves Mexican food so we like to have tacos at least once a week. I found these low carb tortilla shells and to me they taste just the like the regular shells. A regular tortilla shell has 33 grams of carbs and a carb balance tortilla shell only has 6 grams of net carbs. (To find your net carbs subtract the amount of fiber from the amount of carbs and that gives you net carbs). Or you can make taco shells out of cheese. Here is a recipe for homemade cheese shells.

Almond Butter-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I go for almond butter stuffed celery. I love it! Why almond butter instead of peanut butter? Most commercial peanut butters contain fillers and added sugar.

Jerky-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                I am absolutely not a fan of Jerky but I hear some people like it and it’s a perfect low carb snack. The one time I tried Jerky I bought this organic sugar free kind. I didn’t realize I should only eat a small piece at a time. I was at the gym and popped a big piece in my mouth and literally wanted to vomit. It was like chewing on dirty shoe leather. And I was at the gym, I couldn’t very well be spitting into the garbage. I haven’t had Jerky since.

Pizza-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Surprised? Yes you can have low carb pizza. I used this recipe and it was really good, it uses almond flour and not cauliflower! However, next time I would cook it a bit longer so it’s crispy.

Sweet Potato Skins-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Just yum! Sweet potatoes with cheese and bacon is a big win win in my book. Check out this delicious recipe!

Cheese-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           I don’t know about you but I love cheese and I love that I can incorporate it into a low carb lifestyle. My go to cheese choices are Cheddar, Mozzarella, Colby Jack and Gouda.

Guacamole-                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Your body needs healthy fats. When you go low carb you want to make sure you are eating enough healthy fats. They give your body energy and support cell growth. Guacamole with celery is delicious and I love the crunch from the celery instead of using tortilla chips.

As you can see there is more to low carb eating than just meat and veggies. Most meals can be made in a low carb way. Food really is about moderation. You want to keep everything in a healthy portion size. What is one of your favorite low carb meals?
