What if I told you that a Probiotic changed my life. You would call me crazy wouldn’t you? Well it did. I know it seems crazy but stay with me here. I started taking what I would call a super charged probiotic about 15 months ago. We all need probitotics and they are all the rage nowadays for good reason. Our bodies are filled with good and bad bacteria. Probiotics help add the good bacteria we need for a healthy gut. Our modern American lifestyle is rather toxic to our guts.
Things that destroy our good bacteria include overuse of antibiotics, laxatives, antibacterial soaps, chlorinated drinking water, excessive colon cleanses, sterilized food, artificial food coloring, increased carbohydrate consumption, etc. You can read more about what kills our good bacteria here.
So how did a probiotic of all things change my life? The secret in my probiotic is the antifungal that kills candida (yeast) overgrowth. I had a wicked sweet tooth. I would eat 3-4 bags of candy a week. My favorites were Dove milk chocolate candy and Peanut M&M’s. The physcial cravings for chocolate were bad. Well it turns out that a sign of candida overgrowth is sugar cravings. And I had it BAD. After being on my probiotic for about 3 months my sugar cravings went away COMPLETELY! Do I still make bad food choices? Yes occasionally, however I no longer have those physical cravings that would have me hiding in the pantry eating candy (moms I know you know what I’m talking about!). I have not bought a bag of Dove chocolate since 12/2017. Pretty awesome right? So you may be wondering how do you even get candida overgrowth. It’s pretty easy with our lifestyle.
- A diet high in refined carbs and sugar
- Consuming a lot of alcohol
- Using Oral contraceptives
- A high stress lifestyle
- Use of antibiotics
Other candida overgrowth side effects I was able to see huge improvements in include reduced belly fat, no more bloating (I swear I always looked like I was 5 months pregnant), no more constipation (if you are not pooping 2-3 times a day you should be. What goes in should be coming back out), I’ve seen my PMS symptoms decrease about 95% from where they were, I used to wake up every hour and now I sleep soundly through the night, I’m no longer easily irritated, and brain fog is gone. While these are all amazing things to have improved for me another big improvement was my chronic fatigue.
I could not stay awake at all. I’d fall asleep at my computer, as soon as we got in the car, if we were on a long car ride I could feel myself doze off and I have not had any of this happen in the last 15 months.

Other ways to combat candida overgrowth include a candida diet (google candida diet for a full list). The candida diet is low-sugar, anti-inflammatory diet to help promote good gut health and eliminate sugars that feed candida.

- Stop processed food
- Minimize caffeine consumption
- Eat healthy proteins
- Eat fermented foods
- Use healthy fats and oils
